September is always, to me, a favorite month for car shows and cruises. The weather tends to get cooler and the fall colors begin to get interesting. Two of my long standing destinations happen in September. The Auburn Auction & Labor Day event and on the other side of the month, the James Dean Festival. Both of these events I have attended since the early 90's. Both are near and dear to my heart. I started going to Auburn with my father who, like me, was a dyed in the wool car guy. He loved looking at all the antique cars and talking about the good old days when he was a mechanic. With my Dad though, whenever I started getting interested in an old car, he would remind me of the care and expense it required to own and take care of said old car. A more frugal man than he was hard to find. James Dean is a festival my wife and I went to for many years. She still goes but not as frequently. One traditional event our club does is the annual University Place car show. Put on by Linda Cobb, it is a relaxing event held on the front lawn of the nursing home. Lawn chairs are brought out and a box lunch is served. Plenty of beautiful cars and good conversation is the order of the day. It is also a great time for the residents to come out and remember a simpler way of life when they once owned a classic from the past. Join Linda and the gang for a stress free and relaxing lunch. See you there! Paul
